Violence erupts amidst shutdown in Kashmir over Muslim youth's death
Srinagar: Violence erupted in Kashmir on Tuesday following a shutdown call given by separatist Hurriyat Conference to protest against the death of a Muslim youth during clashes with the police. Protests followed the
death of Wanik Farooq on Sunday evening (Jan.31), when police fired teargas shells
to disperse demonstrators. All shops, business establishments and government offices
remained closed, and vehicles stayed off the roads. Despite elaborate security
arrangements, youth pelted stones at vehicles and the security personnel, injuring
some of them. Tension between India and Pakistan has risen in recent weeks after
a series of border skirmishes and a spike in violence by militant groups, most
of them based in the Pakistan-occupied part of Kashmir or other parts of Pakistan.
