June 30, 2010 | Tourism during World Cup to rake in 27 billion rands for South Africa | Johannesburg: South Africa is expected to rake in an estimated 27 billion rands from tourism during the World Cup. "We believe that we couldn't do better," Sport24 quoted SA Tourism's Roshene Singh, as saying. She also said that SA Tourism had conducted a 100 million rand marketing campaign
in the four years leading up to the World Cup to ensure that international tourists
came to the tournament. Singh further said that the figures were looking good,
with Johannesburg sitting at 85 percent occupancy, and Durban and Cape Town between
60 percent and 70 percent. Meanwhile, SA Tourism Chief Executive, Thandiwe January-Mclean,
said that the tournament had been a fabulous opportunity to showcase the country
in totality. "It's given the country the opportunity to do away with the stereotypes,"
he said. |
