August 3, 2010 | New Mangalore airport terminal becomes operational | Mangalore: An Air India Express flight from Dubai became the first aircraft to dock on Monday at the newly integrated
terminal building at Bajpe Airport in Mangalore. The new terminal became operational
at 6.00am and the Air India Express flight IX 820 arrived landed at 7.20 am. The
Mangalore airport's director M.R. Vasudeva and Air India Station Manager Chellam
Prasad welcomed the passengers. Vasudeva said that people are keen to have flights
to Saudi Arabia . "Air India is operating to many of the gulf countries. People
are demanding that there should be a flight for Saudi Arabia . It is possible
that they may consider if it is in the next winter schedule or summer schedule,"
said Vasudeva. The Airports Authority of India has shifted operations to this
terminal on a trial basis. The airport has a length of 8038 feet and the second
runway is around 1650 meters. It is built at a cost of Rs 1.5 billion. About six
parking lots have been constructed and two aero-bridges have been provided. Separate
security hold area for domestic and international passengers has also been provided.
For international passengers duty free shops, custom and immigration department
are also functioning on a requirement basis. |
