September 27, 2009 | Worth Tourism Day celebrated | New Delhi:
Several functions were held on
the occasion of World Tourism Day on Sunday in different parts of the country.
The objective of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within
the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural,
political and economic values worldwide. Since 1980, the United Nations World
Tourism Organisation(UNWTO) has celebrated World Tourism Day on Sep.27. This date
was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The
adoption of these Statutes is considered as milestone in global tourism. Several
programmes including seminars, discussions and exhibitions were organised throughout
the country to mark World Tourism Day. In Chandigarh, Dr Ambedkar Institute of
Hotel Management inaugurated World Tourism Day by organizing an inter-college
flower making competition. Over 80 individuals belonging to different colleges
of Chandigarh participated in this event. In Jammu and Kashmir, J&K Tourism department
marked the World Tourism Day to celebrate diversity, at a grand function organised
by Institute of Hotel Management in Srinagar. State Minister for Tourism Rigzin
Jora on this occasion announced that Pahalgam and Gulmarg would be provided with
Wi-Fi technology for internet connectivity this year while the same facility would
be extended to the Dal area next year. |
