Nandankanan Zological Park in Orissa has a baby chimpanzee

Bhubaneswar: A staff member of the Nandankanan Zoological Park here has taken charge of an abandoned baby chimpanzee just like his own child. Sriharicharan who is an animal keeper at the zoo is parenting a 10-month old baby chimpanzee named Kartik. Range Officer at the Nandankanan Zoological Park Anjan Mohanty narrated the story of Kartik's birth and also explained why the chimpanzee has been given this name. "He is named Kartik as he was born in the month of Kartik. His mother discarded him and did not accept him. Purnima, the mother of Kartik, who was not accepting him, as her previous child was dead. We have managed to take Kartik from his mother Purnima," said Mohanty. According to Sriharicharan, the baby chimpanzee is like a family member to him and he is bringing it up like his own child. "The way we take care of a small child at home, same way I am taking care of him like my own child," said Sriharicharan. The baby chimpanzee was handed over to his grandmother, but as she could not feed him, Kartik was given to Sriharicharan.
