September 28, 2009 | Intense heat wave leaves Jaipur panting | Jaipur:
Even as winter is around the corner, Jaipur continues to reel from an intense
heat wave, the mercury hovering 40-45 degree Celsius. Business in the city has also received a jolt thanks to the heat wave. The tourist, influx into the Pink City has been
severely affected. According to shopkeepers, the excessive heat this year has
reduced business to less than 50 percent in spite of festivals like Navaratri
and Eid passing by. "Our sales used to reach rupees 25,000 during this season
every year, but we are not even able to have sales worth rupees 5000,"said Naresh
Kumar, the owner of a garment shop. "In these ten days, we used to do sales worth
two lakh rupees but we haven't even touched 50,000 rupees. You can experience
such heat in the morning around 10a.m. There are tourists, but most of them just
window shop. There are customers who purchase, but are very choosy about shopping,
making our margins very less," added Kumar. Most people prefer to stay indoors,
while those who don't have such a luxury wear headscarves and carry umbrellas
to avoid the scorching sun. "Diwali is a long way to go. During Navratri, we couldn't
enjoy because of this weather. Even going to office has become tough affecting
our professional life as well," said Manju, a local. The Rajasthan summer has
been difficult. |
