Passengers lament CWG opening ceremony as flight schedules disrupted

New Delhi: Air travellers in different parts of the country faced a difficult time, as they had to wait for long hours since many flights to and from New Delhi were delayed and some were cancelled ahead of the opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. The air space was barred for all flights after 5 p.m. as per the Indian Standard Time. In the morning many passengers were unsure of the scheduled departure of their respective flights. Bhupinder Kumar Sharma, a passenger heading to Punjab , faced a delay of over eight hours. "There are difficulties. Our programme got changed. We had made plans at the place where we are going for holidays but we had to get that cancelled. We had booked the morning tickets in advance for our travel after we landed here. Now all that money is all gone," Sharma said. Many passengers were refused entry after reaching at the airport terminal. "My flight is at 5 p.m. but I came here several hours earlier because I expected traffic on the roads. But there was no traffic," said Amit, a passenger travelling to Karnataka. Keeping security arrangements in mind, air space was closed for all domestic and international flights from Sunday evening and the flights were scheduled to revive early Monday morning. Thousands of spectators were expected at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, where the opening ceremony was held. Close to a 100,000 security personnel were deployed in the city ahead of the mega event.
