October 25, 2010 | India, Japan to simplify visa procedures | Tokyo: Following extensive talks on bilateral, regional and global issues of shared interest held between Indian Prime Minster Dr. Manmohan Singh and Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan , the two countries on Monday decided to simplify visa procedures between them and signed a memorandum to that effect. The
memorandum covers the gamut, including measures related to business visas,
employment visas, tourist visas, student visas as well as temporary visitor visas. The
measures will be implemented
from a date that would be mutually decided by both sides through diplomatic
channels.
Welcoming the move, the joint statement by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and
Japanese
Prime Minister Naoto Kan said that "they hoped that the signing of the Memorandum
on Simplifying Visa Procedures will further facilitate the movement of people
between India and Japan ". Meanwhile, India and Japan today signed agreements
to boost mutual trade, investment and strategic partnership between the two major
economies of Asia . Both the countries today agreed that there is a need to speed
up talks on civil nuclear cooperation deal. The two governments also concluded
negotiations on Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which
signals the economic alignment of two of the largest economies in Asia.
