| November 2, 2010 | Malawian President arrives in New Delhi | | New Delhi: Malawian President Bingu Wa Mutharika arrived here today on a six-day state visit to India to strengthen economic ties between the two nations. Mutharika was accompanied by his wife Callista Mutharika, central ministers and a large business delegation. During his visit, he will hold meetings with his Indian counterpart Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Vice-President
Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna,
and Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, besides other dignitaries. Mutharika and
Patil are expected to discuss a wide range of subjects of bilateral interest covering
economic cooperation, trade and investment, infrastructure, mining, coal, agriculture,
micro, small and medium enterprises, and human resource development. India provided
a line of credit of 30 million US dollars to Malawi in 2008 that was used for
irrigation, grain storage and tobacco threshing. Another line of credit of 50
million US dollars was announced during the visit of Vice-President Hamid Ansari
in January 2010. Both the countries will deliberate on measures to boost bilateral
trade that currently stands at 185 million US dollars.
