| August 30, 2012 | Foreign students being used as political football in visa issue: Union | | London: A students' union in the UK has expressed anger over a move by the British Government, in which it revoked its license to authorize visas, and which now poses 'deportation fears' for over 2,000 foreign students.
The National Union of Students (NUS) claimed that the British Government has treated foreign students 'like a political football' by revoking the university's licence.
The reaction came after the London Metropolitan University has had its Highly Trusted Status (HTS) for sponsoring international students revoked and will no longer be allowed to authorise visas.
"It is disgusting that international students continue to be used as a political football by politicians who seem either incapable of understanding, or are simply uncaring about the impact of their decisions on individuals, universities and the UK economy," The Telegraph quoted National Union of Students (NUS) president Liam Burns, as saying.
The NUS claimed that the move could mean more than 2,000 students could be deported within 60 days unless they find another sponsor.
"Politicians need to realise that a continued attitude of suspicion towards international students could endanger the continuation of higher education as a successful export industry," Burns added.
The university's HTS status was suspended last month while the UK Border Agency (UKBA) examined alleged failings.
