December 1, 2009 | Chennai activists promote city's heritage among school kids | Chennai: Social activists took school children on a heritage tour of Chennai city in a bid to create awareness among the new generation. Belonging to the Indian National
Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, the activists expressed concern over the
city's neglected cultural heritage and said the new generation must accept heritage
tours as a part of heir school curriculum are taking care of the theoretical part.
"Heritage awareness is necessary, and lots of efforts are being made by different
people and heritage lovers and organisations in that direction. And, many of them
may end up as software engineers or others who may not have anything to do with
heritage in their adult life but it is important that they know something of their
heritage and try to preserve it even in their adult life and we feel that such
tours will motivate them in the right direction," said Suresh, Convener, Indian
National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, Chennai. The tour organisers make
sure that apart from giving these children a glimpse of the well-known structures,
the equally magnificent yet lesser known historical places also get a place in
their hearts as well as young minds. They took children on a "historical walk"
of architectural and historical wonders like the old Marundeeswarar Temple, Santhome
Cathedral Basilica Church, Fort St. George of Chennai and other historical places. |
