Heavy snowfall in Ladakh

Leh: Heavy snowfall paralysed normal life in the remote regions of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir like the high altitude areas of Kargil, Zozilla Pass, Khardungla Pass and Nubra valley. "Though the people are facing difficulties and there are traffic jams everywhere, we are very happy to get a heavy snowfall this year. It is very good for the land owners because if it doesn't snow, it won't be good for the farm fields in the region," said Tashi Chotak, a local. Treetops, electric poles, roads and roofs were covered by thick blanket of snow as a result of which the electricity power and telecommunications links have been adversely affected. At Leh airport, all incoming and outgoing flights were cancelled due to poor visibility. About two inches of snow had accumulated at Khardungla Pass, which connects Nubra valley with Leh, the only surface road linking Nubra division with the rest of the Ladakh region. The night temperature in the entire Ladakh region was recorded at a minimum of minus 15 degree Celsius.
