January 4, 2010 | Heavy snowfall blocks Srinagar-Jammu national highway | Srinagar: The traffic came to a standstill on the 300 km Srinagar-Jammu national highway on Monday due to slippery conditions caused by heavy snowfall, leaving hundreds of trucks, passenger buses and tourist vehicles stranded. The authorities
had suspended traffic on Sunday around 1.10 p.m., on the highway connecting
Kashmir to the rest of India. The tourists here are facing a tough time due to the
traffic suspension. "The
highway is completely blocked. There is no facility here like hotels to stay.
Even the shoppers are charging high for goods. I have to get out of this place,
let's see when I succeed," said Suresh Kumar, a tourist from New Delhi. The truck
drivers have requested the concerned authorities to restore the traffic movement.
"We appeal to the government and the traffic police to restore the traffic movement.
We don't have any clue what's happening and when will be the traffic restored,"
said Nasir Ahmad, a truck driver. The inclement weather is hampering road
clearance operations. |
