Ski fans hit the slopes at a training camp in Kashmir

Gulmarg: As cold wave sweeps across northern India, skiers have decided to hit the slopes in Jammu and Kashmir and skiing lessons have kicked off in Gulmarg. The course, run by the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM), has seen 36 students from across the valley taking part. For many students, the course is the highlight of their winter. "The institute trains the students to prepare for competitions at a national level. They are training the younger generation about the techniques of skiing," said Uzair Bhatt, a student. Every year, the IISM organises the courses in five batches during the winter months. It is aimed to boost tourism in the region and promote winter sports among students. "There is a lot of potential in our children but unfortunately we were unable to give the students proper training because of the poor state of our facilities and the unrest in our state. Now that the region is getting better, we have the latest facilities and techniques. We can fulfil the needs of children who are seeking adventure," said Colonel J.S. Dillon, Principal, IISM. Gulmarg is considered the country's premier ski resort with its natural slopes and inclines.
