January 21, 2010 | Centre lifts ban on pre-paid mobile phones in Jammu and Kashmir | New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry on Thursday lifted the ban on pre-paid mobile phones in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the Home Ministry, the removal of the ban is with immediate
effect. The Home Ministry however, has put stringent conditions on operators for
verification of customers. According to Ministry, the decision to lift the ban
was taken after the Centre finalized a perfect plan to ensure proper verification
of cell phone subscribers in the state. Jammu and Kashmir is estimated to have
over 38 lakh cell phone subscribers. The Home Ministry imposed the ban in November
2009. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had earlier said if the service providers
came up with a foolproof verification plan the issue could be revisited. The Centre,
had stated the ban was imposed to protect national security. The Panthers Party
questioned the ban through a public interest litigation (PIL). |
