March 3, 2010 | British Airways employee arrested for plotting terrorist attack | London: An Asian origin British Airways employee has been arrested for his alleged role in raising cash for a terrorist attack, possibly on a jet. The 30-year old suspect, who was held at BA's Newcastle-upon-Tyne call
centre, has been taken to a Central London police station, where he continues
to be held. “An employee was arrested at our Newcastle office last week. We take
matters relating to security extremely seriously and as a responsible company
always fully co-operate with the police,” The Sun quoted a BA spokesman, as saying.
He was questioned for six days after City of Westminster JPs granted an extension
for his custody on Saturday. His arrest followed a combined operation by the Metropolitan
Police Counter Terrorism Command and the North East Counter Terrorism Unit. The
investigation is focusing on the suspect's key contacts and recent movements.
It is believed there was no immediate threat of an attack on a plane or a UK target.
The employee was among 800 staff dealing with passenger bookings in one of the
airline's two big British-based call centres. Staff have access to thousands of
flight details and are familiar with basic security procedures. The UK terrorist
threat level is currently at "severe", one below the top rating "critical".
