President's Rule in poll-bound Puducherry: Opp not to form Govt
The Centre has approved the President's Rule in Puducherry as the Opposition did not stake claim to form a Government after Chief Minister V Narayanasamy resigned without taking a vote of trust.

NEW DELHI, Feb 24: The Union Cabinet has approved President's Rule in Puducherry following the fall of the Congress Government in the Union Territory. Chief Minister V Narayanasamy had failed to prove majority in the Assembly as required by LG Tamilisai Soundararajan on Monday.

The Opposition, composed of the BJP, the AIADMK and the NR Congress, did not stake claim to form an alternative Government in the poll-bound UT.

The CM had lost majority support in a House of 33 members, including three BJP nominees, as five party MLAs and one DMK member had resigned. The L-G had asked the CM to take a confidence vote by Monday evening. However, Narayanasamy resigned without taking a confidence vote although he had moved the trust motion in the morning. The Assembly had met in a special one-day session for the purpose.

In his speech Narayanasamy alleged that the Centre had plotted with Raj Nivas to oust him. He and his ruling party MLAs later walked out before the motion was put to the vote.

Five Congress MLAs and one DMK MLA had resigned in the last 30 days. N Dhanavelu, a Congress MLA, was disqualified last year.

The strength of the House was reduced to 26 members with seven seats vacant. The ruling party had nine Congress, two DMK and one Independent (12) while in the Opposition All India NR Congress had seven, AIADMK four and BJP nominated three (14).

The Congress had won 15 seats in the 2016 Assembly elections. It was supported by the DMK which had got three seats and by one Independent (19). In the Opposition, NR Congress had won seven seats and its alliance partner AIADMK four and the BJP had three nominees (14).

Speaker VP Sivakozhundhu declared that the Government lost its majority and adjourned the House sine die.

Tamilisai Soundararajan took charge as LG on February 16 after Kiran Bedi was removed by the Centre. He had ordered the floor test.
