Covid wave: Tamil Nadu extends lockdown curbs till March 31
Those coming from high risk States like Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka have to carry a negative RT-PCR covid report of not more than 72 hours old.

CHENNAI, Mar 2: Tamil Nadu has extended the corona lockdown till March 31 as there has been a surge in the covid cases since the last few weeks after a sharp decline over the months.

The Government has imposed curbs on travellers from Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka as a precautionary measure. Those coming from the States affected by the new wave have to carry a negative RT-PCR report of not more than 72 hours old.

The State Government has fixed the responsibility of implementing the lockdown guidelines on the district administrations, police and the civic authorities concerned. A notification has been issued under the Disaster Management Act listing the relaxations allowed. The district administrations have been advised to invoke Section 144 wherever necessary. The administrations must also ensure accountability of officers.

The thrust of enforcement has been laid on mask wearing, keeping physical distance, taking harsh action against those spitting on the roads, staggering of seating/standing in work places and markets, thermal screening at institutions, frequent sanitation of public utility spaces and avoiding gatherings.

In the State, there were three deaths on the previous day and the total toll reached 12,496, new cases 479, total cases 8.51 lakh and active cases 4,022. The maximum of cases and casualties among the cities have been reported from Chennai: the new daily cases at 182, and the total cases at 2,35,532.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has announced that the election to the Assembly will take place in a single phase on April 6 alongwith Kerala, Assam, Puducherry and Bengal.

The polling staff will be vaccinated on priority basis and will be provided all the paraphernalia to prevent corona infection.
