Green fungus found in covid patient in Indore hospital
A covid patient who was undergoing treatment in an Indore hospital for the last two months has been diagnosed with green fungus and shifted to Mumbai for treatment. Green fungus or Aspergillosis is caused by the fungi known as aspergillus.

INDORE, June 16: After cases of black fungus infection in patients recovering from covid were being increasingly reported from across the country, and isolated incidence of yellow and white fungus infections, now a case of green fungus has come to light in Indore in Madhya Pradesh, possibly the first case in the country.

The patient, who developed post-covid problems, was tested for black fungus or mucormycosis on suspicion and it was found that he contracted the infection called green fungus. The specific symptoms of covid or long covid and those of mucormycosis are sometimes hard for medicos to tell apart.

The 34-year-old covid patient was undergoing treatment at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) for the last two months for covid. He has been shifted to Mumbai by air ambulance for fungus treatment, Mint reported. His sinuses, lungs and blood were infected. He had high fever and bleeding from the nose.

What are these varieties of black, yellow, white and green (Aspergillus, causing Aspergillosis, is a mold present indoors and outdoors) fungus. These are all specimens of mucormycosis, cinderella and aspergillus. They are not coloured but colours come up in lab culture. In black fungus, of course, the skin turns dark because of the dead skin and tissues.

The new fungus affects the lungs more and can be fatal like black fungus. Black fungus affects the nose, the eyes, brain and the lungs. Loss of vision is a major concern if the eyes are affected. Surgical intervention for debridement of necrotic tissues by ENT specialists may become necessary. Mortality rate is quite high.

Clinical management of mucormycosis include administration of the costly liposomal amphotericin-B injection (safer than lipid complex amphotericin-B and amphotericin-B) or isavuconazole and in mild cases posaconazole tabs and Noxafil brand syrups.

Although the fungus is present in the air almost everywhere, the immune system fights it off as part of its routine job of keeping away viruses and bacteria from attacking the human body. But what is happening currently is due to the fact that the immune system has been rendered ineffective in checking diseases in patients recovering from covid as a result of an excessive use of immunosuppressants as part of the covid treatment protocol (corticosteroids and tocilizumab, which, for example, predispose covid patients to mucormycosis) to prevent cytokine storms that damage vital organs. The classical risk factors of mucormycosis like diabetes have now been found not to be the causative factors in the covid-fungus cases. Respiratory infections from influenza etc can also cause fungus disease. A contributory factor has been a compromised sanitary environment in the overcrowded hospitals which is an excellent breeding ground for fungus. The ventilators in the ICUs, nasal cannula and the industrial oxygen used during the shortage are also being blamed, for injuring the airways and facilitating the fungus infection on immuno-compromised mucosal tissues.

But the primary data needed as a first step in disease control has been buried, as always.

Cleanliness is the only way to prevent such infections - Cleaning up one's space of accumulating items, steering clear of dust and particulate matter and avoiding damp and non-sterilised instruments. Hygiene is prevention and an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure!
