Merkel takes Moderna's covid vaccine as second dose instead of AstraZeneca
While there are conflicting reports on the effect of mixing of doses of covid vaccine, Novavax is undertaking a study in the UK to confirm if it is safe and beneficial. At present vaccine is changed for reason of nonavailabilty of same product.

BERLIN, June 22: German Chancellor Angela Merkel has taken Moderna's covid vaccine as second dose instead of Oxford-AstraZeneca she had received as the first dose. The 66-year-old was vaccinated with the second dose on Tuesday. The first dose was administered in April.

Germany was among some European countries that halted vaccination with AstraZeneca following reports of incidents of blood clotting. However, Germany reversed the stand in April and resumed the vaccination drive with AstraZeneca. In fact, Merkel took the first jab after that in April.

Meanwhile, there are also conflicting opinions about administering mixed doses but there has not been any confirming studies about the safety or benefits or otherwise. It is not known what prompted Merkel's preference for a different vaccine for second dose. A UK study found that chills, headaches and muscle pain were more frequent when different vaccine doses were mixed, for example, Pfizer after AstraZeneca.

Some countries have resorted to mixing of doses for the reason of nonavailabilty of the particular vaccines in ample quantity. The Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec are planning to mix doses for want of enough AstraZeneca as well as to ward off the side-effects of AstraZeneca. Canada has also asked its citizens to go in for Moderna as Pfizer shipments were delayed last week.

Meanwhile, Novavax said it would take part in a mix-and-match covid vaccine trial with its own vaccine in the UK.

In Germany, 51 per cent of the population has received their first dose.
