Sinovac, Sinopharm: Vaccine breakthroughs in Chile, Seychelles
Earlier Seychelles faced a spike in covid cases after inoculating its population with Sinopharm. 50 to 68 per cent of the populations in these countries, now facing a surge, were administered the cheap Chinese vaccines. Bahrain and the UAE are planning to give a booster shot of Pfizer vaccine to those who have taken the Chinese jabs.

WASHINGTON, June 24: Of 95 countries which have received Chinese vaccines made by Sinovac and Sinopharm, Chile, Bahrain and Mongolia are currently reporting a surge in covid cases. Earlier Seychelles had faced the same situation.

All these countries had used the Chinese vaccines to inoculate more than half of their population. However, Mongolia and Bahrain have denied any incidence of vaccine breakthroughs. And officials in Seychelles have defended Sinopharm.

About 50 to 68 per cent of the populations in these countries had been fully vaccinated with the Chinese vaccines, outpacing the United States, according to a report in the New York Times.

It said Mongolia eased covid restrictions after vaccinating 52 per cent of its population. But it recorded 2,400 new infections on last Sunday, four times higher than a month before.

The WHO had given its authorisation to the Chinese vaccines. Sinopharm vaccine was shown as having an efficacy rate of 78.1 per cent and the Sinovac vaccine 51 per cent while Pfizer and Moderna shots confer over 90% protection. However, China has not given out any data on clinical trials to show the safety and efficacy. Sinovac and Sinopharm's vaccines use inactivated virus in their shot in the traditional way. There is no word yet on breakthrough infections.

The Bridge Consultancy of Beijing has been quoted as saying that 95 countries have received doses of the two Chinese vaccines made by biotech companies Sinovac and Sinopharm.

It is reported that Bahrain and the UAE are planning to give a booster shot of Pfizer vaccine to those who have taken the Chinese Sinopharm. In Chile more than 60% of the population has been given Sinovac's CoronaVac.

According to WHO data, Chile has a total of 1,522,223 covid cases and 5,205 cases were reported in the last 24 hours as of June 22; Bahrain 263,295 and 403, Mongolia 95,819 cases and 2,268 and Seychelles 14,620 and 71 cases in last 24 hours as of June 22.

Chile declared a lockdown in Santiago last week. Sixty per cent of the population was fully vaccinated with Chinese vaccine Sinovac. Seychelles had taken Sinopharm, so also Bahrain and the UAE. Mongolia was an early bidder for Sinopharm.
