Billionaire Jeff Bezos steps down as Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy takes over
After stepping down as Amazon CEO, billionaire Jeff Bezos will spend his time in activities related to space travel, media and philanthropy. He is travelling to space on his Blue Origin's first human flight on July 20 with his brother Mark.

SEATTLE (WA), July 5: Billionaire Jeff Bezos, who founded Amazon 27 years ago on July 5, 1994, officially stepped down as its CEO on Monday, handing over the reins to the retailer's Web Services chief Andy Jassy. He will remain as Amazon’s executive chairman.

Monday was the 27th anniversary of the launch of Amazon's online bookstore.

Bezos, 57, who started out from his Seattle garage is today the world's richest. He is worth $202 billion. He will spend his time at space travel company Blue Origin, media and philanthropy. He had bought the leading American daily newspaper Washington Post in 2013 for $250 million. His philanthropic venture, Day One Fund, was founded to help the homeless, and Earth Fund will deal with climate management.

Bezos has invested part of his fortune in the rocket company, Blue Origin. He will be travelling to space on his Blue Origin's first human flight on July 20 with his brother Mark, fulfilling his childhood dream. Blue Origin is all set to launch space tourism. However, Virgin Galactic's Richard Branson will make it earlier on July 11.

He had recently divorced his wife MacKenzie Scott, who was given a quarter of his company stock in settlement.

The coronavirus pandemic that almost destroyed the world economy and claimed a heavy toll of human lives, on the other hand, boosted the $1.7 trillion e-commerce company's prospects multifold as customers wholly depended on online shopping. The profits trebled in the first quarter of 2021. Amazon is the second-largest private employer in the US, next to Walmart. Bezos' entertainment business is also buying the MGM movie studio.
