28 killed in Russian plane crash; Philippine military plane crash toll 50
A Russian Antonov An-26 plane crashed in the far east while trying emergency landing in poor visibility, killing 28, on Tuesday. On Sunday, a Philippine military plane crashed killing 47 soldiers and three people on the ground.

MOSCOW, July 7: All 28 people aboard were killed when a Russian plane crashed in the far east while trying emergency landing in poor visibility. The mishap took place at 3 pm local time (03:00 GMT) on Tuesday. The wreckage was found in Kamchatka Peninsula.

The plane, an Antonov An-26 twin-engined turboprop, was en route from regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Palana in northwestern Kamchatka, when it lost contact with air traffic control, official sources said. It was a decades-old passenger plane. Of the 28 died, six were crew.

Probably the plane crashed against a seashore rock in poor visibility. The same way another crash took place nine years go killing 10 people. The rock, known as Pyatibratka (Of Five Brothers), is “notoriously” dangerous for landing planes, reports said. “In an inspection from the air, the aircraft’s debris were found: part of the fuselage on the seashore, part in the water and in the coastal area,” Vladimir Solodov, Kamchatka Governor said in a statement.

Philippine plane crash casualty: 50

MANILA: A Philippines military transport aircraft carrying 96 combat troops overshot the runway while landing at Jolo airport in Sulu province on Sunday and went up in flames after hitting trees. It was a Lockheed C-130 Hercules. Three people on the ground hit by debris also died, taking the toll to 50. Police and firefighters rescued 49 military personnel.

The plane was one of the two given to Philippines by the US Air Force this year. The troops were being deployed in the south to fight the rebels.
