Third covid wave likely: Delhi schools to remain closed, says Kejriwal
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said the schools in Delhi will remain closed as there is a threat of a third covid wave. "We are seeing trends internationally that there will be a third wave of COVID-19. So, until the vaccination process is complete we would not like to take risk with children," he said.

NEW DELHI, July 16: Taking a bold stand over fighting covid infections in the city, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said the schools in Delhi will remain closed till the threat of a third covid wave recedes. There are no plans yet on reopening them soon, he said.

"We are seeing trends internationally that there will be a third wave of COVID-19. So, until the vaccination process is complete we would not like to take risk with children. So there aren't any plans to reopen schools as of now," Kejriwal told the media on Thursday.

However, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in an order on Saturday had said that the auditoriums and assembly halls in schools and educational institutions can be used for training and meeting purposes with a 50 per cent seating capacity limit.

Delhi recorded 72 new infections and one death in the past 24 hours. The respective figures for India as a whole were 41,806 cases and 581 deaths, taking the total casualty so far to 4,11,989. Among new deaths in the country, Maharashtra and Kerala together registered over 50% of the casualties. There has not been any scientific explanation so far on how about 2,50,000 people died in just two months in the second covid wave while in the previous one full year the casualty was 1,50,000 deaths.

The figures for new infections in Delhi are hovering below the 100 mark for the past fortnight. Therefore, the city Government has been gradually lifting most of the restrictions on movements and activities.

The number of vaccinations in Delhi so far done is 91 lakh. Currently, over 1.5 lakh people are being vaccinated daily. The number of people receiving at least one dose in the country is over 39 crore.
