Eiffel Tower reopens: Only 10,000 tourists allowed a day due to covid
About 10,000 tourists will be allowed a day against 25,000 in pre-covid times. Every year, there used to be 7 million visitors on an average to the French Capital’s 324-metre iconic structure. Online ticket issue started on June 1. Most of the covid restrictions are lifted now. The losses due to the closure last year are said to be $146 million. Eiffel et Compagnie, a firm owned by French architect and engineer Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, designed and constructed the iron tower in 1889. It was built to celebrate the French Revolution's centennial year during the Exposition Universelle or World's Fair.

PARIS, July 17: The Eiffel Tower reopened on Friday after remaining closed for eight months due to covid restrictions. The Tower operator said about 10,000 tourists will be allowed a day, while in normal times the footfall limit was 25,000. Annually, there are 7 million visitors on an average.

From July 21, visitors aged 18 and over must present a European Union covid certificate and others a health pass for entry.

An announcement on May 20 had said "the French Capital’s iconic structure will reopen from July 16 to tourists eager to climb the 324-metre tower by staircase or lifts." Online ticket issue started on June 1. Most of the covid restrictions were lifted by May last week. Restaurants and bars in Paris and throughout France reopened. The curfew was pushed back to 9 pm.

The Tower had been closed since the second lockdown began at the end of October. The losses suffered during 2020-21 due to the closure are said to be $146 million. Six million people visited the Tower in 1919.

The iron tower had reopened to visitors on June 25 last year after the first lockdown lasting 104 days. That was the City of Lights' icon's longest hiatus since World War II. The lifts were not allowed then because of social distancing rules. And the top remained closed.

In the past, certain incidents like the November 2015 terrorist attack in the city had disrupted the regular operations leading to short closures.

Eiffel Tower is not only a city icon but has also become a symbol of love for many couples from all over the world. It is because of thousands of marriage proposal made under the beautiful tower every year.

Eiffel et Compagnie, a firm owned by French architect and engineer Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, designed and constructed the iron tower in 1889. It was built to celebrate the French Revolution's centennial year during the Exposition Universelle or World's Fair, at the Champs de Mars. The purpose was to show the other nations the power and the industrial abilities of France.
