114 doctors died of covid in Indonesia in July; Delta cases spike in US
The casualties among the health workers in Indonesia were also very heavy during July despite 95% of them having been vaccinated with Chinese Sinovac. About 220 health workers died of the Delta variant of coronavirus during the first fortnight. Shortages of hospital beds and oxygen supplies were acute and people were dying at home and outside waiting for treatment. The new Delta variant is now spreading fast in Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia in the region and in the US and the UK too. However, most countries report that those vaccinated have been found safe.

JAKARTA, July 21: Hundred and fourteen doctors died in Indonesia of covid in the month of July so far while the total casualties of doctors since the pandemic began last year stood at 545, the Indonesian Doctors' Association said. The casualties among other health workers were also very heavy during the last three weeks despite the fact that 95% of them were vaccinated with Chinese Sinovac six months ago. About 220 health workers died of the highly transmissible Delta variant of coronavirus during the first fortnight while the total deaths due to covid since early last year were 1,400.

Shortages of hospital beds and oxygen supplies were acute throughout Indonesia. Hospitals were overflowing with patients and people were dying of covid at home. Over 1,000 deaths were being reported daily and makeshift graveyards were working round-the-clock.

In fact, cases surged after the Eid holiday in May when people violated the covid guidelines and undertook lots of travel.

The new Delta variant is now spreading fast in Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia in the region with low vaccination rates. Indonesia was described as the epicentre of Delta virus early July after India in the months of April and May. During the two-month period, the daily deaths rose to 4,500 in India, breaking all world records.

The highly infectious Delta variant is playing havoc with countries like Britain and US also. In the US there is a hike of 70% over the last week and deaths have gone up by 26%. The average number of daily cases in the US is more than 26,000, while the last month it was only 11,000, as per the CDC. Both the UK and the US rely on vaccination to check the spread of Delta. Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca have been reportedly found to be largely effective against the Delta variant.

US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci has said that the Delta variant has been detected in around 100 countries. In Australia, half the country including Victoria and Sydney is under lockdown. Philippines, Sri Lanka and Spain have also reported a spike in the Delta cases.

Europe's drug regulator has warned the Delta variant of coronavirus will account for 90% of cases in the European Union countries by the end of August.
