18 migrant workers sleeping on road killed in truck mishap in Barabanki
Eighteen migrant labourers returning to their native places in Bihar from Punjab and Haryana were crushed to death when their stationary bus was rammed by a truck from behind on Tuesday night in Barabanki, near Lucknow. The bus had broken down and they were sleeping in front of it when the mishap took place. It was raining at the time. The bus was carrying over 100 workers. The injured have been taken to hospitals by police.

LUCKNOW, July 28: Eighteen labourers, who were sleeping on the road, were killed when their parked bus, rammed from behind by a speeding truck, ran over them on Tuesday night in Barabanki, 30 km from here.

The migrant labourers returning to their native places in Bihar from Punjab and Haryana where they were employed as contract workers, were resting as their double-decker bus broke down at around 8 pm. The axle had broken down. The tragedy occurred at 11 pm. The bus coming from Ambala was carrying 130 workers.

Several people who were sitting inside were also injured. They have been shifted to hospitals. Some bodies were stuck beneath the bus.

It was raining heavily when the accident took place. Due to the accident, the national highway was blocked for five kilometres.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of the deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000 each. In a tweet, Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. He spok to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the proper treatment of the injured.
