The DGCA said in a circular on Friday the ban on international commercial flights is extended till August 31 due to the covid pandemic that is still spreading. Under the air bubble agreement, international passenger flights will be allowed on selected routes in a case to case basis. Domestic flights have been allowed to operate at a limited occupancy of 65% of capacity since May.

NEW DELHI, July 31: India has extended the ban on international flights till August 31 as the incidence of covid infections is still ruling high.

The Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said on Friday that the ban on international commercial flights to and from India is extended till August 31 due to the covid pandemic still being active. Earlier, the flights were banned till July 31.

The DGCA circular, however, said that international passenger and cargo flights will be allowed on selected routes in a case to case basis. Domestic flights are allowed to operate at a limited occupancy of 65% of capacity since May.

The aviation, travel and tourism industries have nearly collapsed because of the closure of most of economic activities around the world in the last year and a half in order to arrest the transmission of the ferocious covid pandemic.

International passenger flights were suspended from March 23 last year due to covid. Subsequently, India had entered into air bubble pacts with nearly 30 countries, including Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Canada, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Iraq, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, the Maldives, Nepal, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, Ukraine, the UAE, the UK, Uzbekistan and the US under which country to country flights are allowed on mutual arrangements.

Worldwide, the vaccination drive has not helped open up the skies.
