27% quota for OBC, 10% for EWS in all-India seats of State medical, dental colleges
The OBC will get 27% and the EWS will get 10% of the seats of the all-India quota in State Government medical and dental colleges. The quota is for NEET qualified candidates for admission to the under-graduate and post-graduate courses in medical education. Fifteen per cent of UG seats and 50% PG seats in the State Government medical and dental colleges constitute the all-India quota and the rest is State quota. The scheme was implemented in Central institutions long time back.

NEW DELHI, July 31: The Centre has approved 27% reservation for the OBC and 10% for the EWS in the all-India quota of medical/dental seats in under-graduate and post-graduate courses in the State Government medical and dental colleges. The quota programme was implemented in the Central institutions earlier.

The quota will be available from the current year. Of the medical seats available in State Government colleges for students qualifying in the NEET test, 15% of UG seats and 50% PG seats constitute the all-India quota and the rest is State quota.

According to the Health Ministry, the reservation will release 1,500 seats for the OBC (Other Backward Classes) and 550 seats for EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) in the UG courses and 2,500 seats and 1,000 seats, respectively, in the PG courses, from the all-India quota. A total of 5,550 candidates from these communities will benefit from the decision from the academic year 2021-22 onwards.

“This was not extended to the AIQ seats of State (It has been implemented in Central institutions) medical and dental colleges...Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has taken a historic and a landmark decision for providing 27% reservation for OBCs and 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in the All India Quota (AIQ) Scheme for undergraduate and postgraduate medical/dental courses (MBBS / MD / MS / Diploma / BDS / MDS) from the current academic year 2021-22 onwards," an official statement said.

This has been a longstanding demand of the communities. Since 1986 there has been several amendments and additions to the quota system and the issue has faced several litigations.

"Our Government has taken a landmark decision for providing 27% reservation for OBCs and 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections in the All India Quota Scheme for undergraduate and postgraduate medical/dental courses from the current academic year," Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted. "This will immensely help thousands of our youth every year get better opportunities and create a new paradigm of social justice in our country," he added.

Some OBC leaders had met the Prime Minister on Wednesday to press for their demand and the decision was taken the following day. However, the decision has been criticised by sections as a move to sway the electorate in UP and Gujarat where elections are due.

Seen in the background of a large number of OBC leaders being inducted in the Cabinet in the just concluded reshuffle and considering the forthcoming elections in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh where around 40% of the electorate constitute backward communities, the Opposition has raised allegations that the quota programme forms part of the ruling party's appeasement policy to win the elections.
