UK eases travel curbs for Indians; but Covishield, Covaxin not accepted yet
The relaxation means Indian passengers will no longer be subjected to a compulsory paid 10-day quarantine at a Government-approved hotel on their arrival in Britain. Now they can quarantine themselves at home or in their place of stay and take two tests in eight days following one test three days before departure. No chance for those vaccinated in India?

LONDON, Aug 10: The UK has moved India from 'red' to 'amber' in the list of countries from where travellers are allowed to enter Britain. This is expected to help a lot of students, professionals and tourists who have been waiting to come to Britain. The relaxation took effect from 4 am on Sunday.

Under the 'amber' category, Indians arriving in the UK will quarantine at home or in their place of stay for 10 days and take a covid test each on or before the second and eighth day of stay in the country.

There is no quarantine restriction for those who are fully immunised against covid, but they have to take a test on or before the second day of their arrival. However, this quarantine waiver is for those who are vaccinated in the UK or other European countries and the US. The UK is undecided on Covishield, the Indian version of AstraZeneca produced by Serum Institute of India, and indigenous Covaxin.

Those coming from amber-listed countries must also take a test three days before departure and also book slots for tests in the UK. They will also complete a passenger locator form on arrival.

The United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain have also been placed in the amber list.

Those who come from the red-listed countries will now have to pay a higher fee of £2,285 for staying at Government-approved quarantined hotels from August 12. Currently the fee is £1,750.

Although scheduled international flights continue to remain suspended, under a bilateral agreement flights are currently operated between India and the UK. The easing of restrictions for Indians a has boosted ticket sales. India was put on the red list by the UK when the second wave of covid called Delta variant started sweeping the country.

Meanwhile, reports say covid variant Delta has a complete domination in England with young people between the ages of 13 and 24 years bearing the brunt of the infection. Over 75% of adults have received both doses of vaccine in England. Delta variant could be 40–60% more infectious than the Alpha variant. This explains its current dominance in England. Daily number of new people tested positive on Tuesday was 23,510 and the total was 61,17,540. There have been a total of 1,54,202 deaths so far. The new deaths reported on Tuesday was 146.
