Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin loses support, resigns
Muhyiddin's coalition Government lost support and he resigned on Monday. He had the shortest term of 18 months in office. The palace has appointed him as the caretaker Prime Minister as elections cannot be held immediately because of covid.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17: Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin resigned on Monday after losing his majority in the 222-seat parliament. His Government fell as the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) withdrew support to the coalition. There is no guarantee of an alternative, stable Government being formed in the near future. Muhyiddin had the shortest term of 18 months in office. Political instability has been haunting Malaysia for long.

While appointing Muhyiddin as the caretaker Prime Minister, King Al-Sultan Abdullah said he will name a new Prime Minister soon as per the Constitution. The palace says fresh elections cannot be held in the midst of a surging covid pandemic.

The UMNO, Malaysia's oldest party, is likely to fill the vaccum in the long run. It had lost the elections in 2018 due to corruption charges.

Apart from Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, Muhyiddin's deputy Ismail Sabri Yaakob and UMNO's Hishammuddin Hussein, a former foreign minister, are in the forefront of contenders for the Prime Minister's post.

"I will never conspire with the kleptocrat group, interfere with the independence of the judiciary and turn my back on the federal constitution merely to remain in power," Muhyiddin said in his televised speech on Monday.
