Former UP CM Kalyan Singh, 89, passes away in Lucknow hospital
Kalyan Singh, 89, who was the BJP Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh when the Babri Masjid was demolished on December 6, 1992, passed away on Saturday at a Lucknow hospital where he had been undergoing treatment for a long time. He died of multi-organ failure. Singh, an OBC leader, was Chief Minister of UP twice and was also Governor of Rajasthan. He will be cremated in his ancestral place Atrauli in Aligarh on Monday.

LUCKNOW, Aug 22: Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP leader Kalyan Singh passed away at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow on Saturday due to sepsis and multi-organ failure. He was 89.

Singh had been undergoing treatment in the the hospital since July 4. On Friday, his condition deteriorated and was put on dialysis.

His mortal remains were brought to the UP Assembly at 11 am Sunday and the BJP office at 12.30 pm. His body was later taken to the airport at 4 pm to be flown to Aligarh. He was born in Atrauli in Aligarh district. Singh’s body will be cremated on Monday.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has declared a three-day State mourning. August 23 was declared a holiday.

Kalyan Singh, an OBC leader, was UP's Chief Minister twice. His first tenure, when the BJP came to power the first time, coincided with the demolition of Babri Masjid, on December 6, 1992. He had also been a Member of Parliament. He later served as Rajasthan Governor. He left the BJP thrice, returning each time.

"We lost a capable leader. We should make maximum efforts by taking his values & resolutions to compensate for him; we should leave no stone unturned in fulfilling his dreams. I pray to Lord Ram to give Kalyan Singh a place by him & give strength to his family to bear this pain," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his tribute. He paid his last respects to the late party leader at the latter's residence in Lucknow.
