Zydus 3-dose covid vaccine for children to be available in October
The details about immunisation of children are yet to be worked out as there are around 12 crore children in the age group of 12-18 and Zydus has said it is likely to produce only 10 million vaccine doses a month from October. The CDSCO had on August 20 given emergency use authorisation to Zydus Cadila's plasmid DNA vaccine ZyCoV-D for use in children above 12 years.

NEW DELHI, Aug 28: The Zydus-Cadila vaccine, which can also be administered to children above 12 years of age, will be rolled out in October. The company has said it is likely to produce 10 million vaccine doses a month from October.

However, the details about immunisation of children are yet to be worked out. In the absence of sufficient doses, the Government may decide to go for priority vaccination of children with comorbidities first.

There are around 12 crore children in the age group of 12-18 years and the total population of those under 18 years is 44 crore.

The Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation (CDSCO) had on August 20 given emergency use authorisation to Zydus Cadila's plasmid DNA vaccine ZyCoV-D for children over 12 years. Unlike all other covid vaccines ZyCoV-D is three-dose (28 days 2D, 56 days 3D ). This is also the world's first DNA vaccine for covid and also the first for all above 12 years of age. The phase III clinical trials had showed the vaccine to have an efficacy of 66.6%. The needle-free vaccine is adminstered with a painless intradermal applicator, being tried first time. The vaccine was developed in partnership with the Department of Biotechnology.

Dr NK Arora, Chairperson of the Covid Working Group of India's National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI), said, "Children can go to schools. There is no need for vaccination but it is necessary to develop a shield around them by ensuring that their parents and school staff are vaccinated." Therefore, priority should be given to these groups before launching the vaccination of children, he said. While allaying undue fears over a third wave of covid, he said children are less likely to get severe form of infection.

In paediatric healthcare facilities, availability of doctors and equipment like ventilators and ambulances is far from satisfactory as of now in case of a covid outbreak that affects children also, according to the National Institute of Disaster Management. The NIDM comes under the Home Ministry. It has submitted a report on the status of preparations to face a likely third wave of covid and its recommendations.

Till now, 50% of eligible adults in the country have received at least one dose of a covid vaccine. India has administered mostly Serum Institute of India-manufactured Oxford-AstraZeneca or Bharat Biotech's indigenously developed and manufactured Covaxin. The Zydus vaccine will be the sixth covid vaccine approved for emergency use in india.
