Power failure in flooded Mexican hospital kills 17 patients
The patients were mostly covid cases needing life-saving equipments run on electricity. They died as all systems collapsed when the hospital was flooded leading to power breakdown. An overflowing Tula river entered the hospital and filled up to knee level. The hospital is on the outskirts of Mexico City. Rescuers evacuated about 40 patients.

MEXICO CITY, Sept 8: Torrential rain and floods bursting its banks, river Tula overflew into the town, entered a hospital and killed 17 patients, many of who were covid patients, in the central Mexican State of Hidalgo, on the outskirts of Mexico City, on Tuesday, according to a late report. Rescuers evacuated about 40 patients.

The deaths occurred mainly due to power breakdown caused by the floods as power is essential to run life-saving equipments and monitoring systems for ventilators etc, especially for covid patients. As the hospital was inundated, even generators did not function.

The army was deployed to assist in the rescue operations. Over 30,000 people across the State have been affected. A video from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) said 40 other patients survived. Some patients were intubated. About 2,000 houses suffered flood damage.

A boat transporting the State Governor Omar Fayad sank in the river. He later tweeted that he was "safe and sound", adding that the State authorities would continue co-ordinating emergency operations in the affected areas. He said 16 of 17 patients who died were covid patients.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he was "very saddened" by the hospital death.
