Punjab CM Amarinder quits, Sunil Jakhar or Sidhu may take over
Even as the AICC had convened a legislature party meeting on Saturday evening, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh resigned from his post in the morning saying he was being humiliated for a long time. A tussle in the party was going on for long involving Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was leading a revolt against Captain. Former PCC president Sunil Jakhar and Navjot Singh Sidhu's are among the names being considered for the post. The Assembly elections are due in a few months.

CHANDIGARH, Sept 18: Following differences in the Congress party, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Captain Singh resigned from his post on Saturday morning. Amarinder handed over his resignation to Governor Banwarilal Purohit. It has been accepted.

The resignation came ahead of a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting convened by AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab Harish Rawat at 5 pm on Saturday. Over 50 MLAs had written to Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday night that he be removed. Former PCC president Sunil Jakhar and Navjot Singh Sidhu's are among the names being considered for the post.

The CLP meeting later passed a resolution asking Sonia Gandhi to decide about the future course of action.

The development is the culmination of a revolt Navjot Singh Sidhu had been leading in the Congress against Captain for a long time.

Captain said that he had been "humiliated" and that the party was free to appoint "who they trust" as the Chief Minister. The Assembly elections are a few months away. "I will talk to my supporters and then I will decide on my future in politics,” Captain said.

“I have resigned from the post of Chief Minister. I spoke to the party president and conveyed that I shall be resigning in the morning itself. The point is that it was the third time in the past few months that MLAs are being summoned to Delhi (by party central leadership); it gives an impression of element of doubt upon me for not being able to run (the government), but I feel humiliated the way things have gone,” Capt. Amarinder told the media after submitting his resignation.

“I decided to quit, and they can elect anyone as Chief Minister who they trust,” he added.
