Canadian PM Trudeau retains power in snap polls, to lead a minority Govt
The mid-term poll in Canada has returned Trudeau to head a majority Govt again, despite his intense campaign over what he claimed as his successful handling of the coronavirus pandemic. His Liberal Party got 158 seats, one more than it won in 2019, and 12 short of the 170 needed for a majority in the House of Commons.

OTTAWA, Sept 21: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has won the parliamentary election a third time although not getting absolute majority. He claimed he has won a clear majority in the snap poll held two years ahead, for his Liberal Party, while his main opponent, Conservative Party leader Erin O'Toole, conceded defeat. It will be a minority Government like in 2019.

He had campaigned much on the count of what he claimed as his Government's successful handling of coronavirus pandemic. However, he faced flak over the handling of the Afghan pullout.

"You are sending us back to work with a clear mandate to get Canada through this pandemic, and to the brighter days ahead," the 49-year-old Prime Minister said in a victory speech to supporters in Montreal on Monday night, accompanied by his family. "My friends, that is exactly what we are ready to do."

O'Toole said, speaking in French, "Five weeks ago, Mr. Trudeau asked for a majority, he said the minority parliament was 'unworkable.' But tonight Canadians did not give Mr. Trudeau the majority mandate he wanted. In fact Canadians sent him back with another minority at the cost of 600 million Canadian dollars and deeper divisions in our great country."

The Liberal Party was elected in 158 seats, one more than they won 2019, and 12 short of the 170 needed for a majority in the House of Commons.

The Conservatives were elected in 119 seats, two less than they won in 2019. The leftist New Democrats were elected in 25, while the Bloc Québécois were elected in 34 and the Greens were two.

In a post-election tradition,Trudeau greeted commuters and posed for pictures at a subway stop in his district in Montreal on Tuesday morning.
