Heavy rain to continue in Kerala, night travel ban in hilly areas

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Oct 13: Heavy rain has been forecast to continue for the next five more days in Kerala. There are chances of very heavy rain, up to 20 cm, in some districts, the weather office said.

Storms are likely to occur along the coasts and fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea. A travel ban has been imposed on hilly areas from 7 pm to 7 am. NDRF teams have been deployed in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Kottayam districts. Residents of vulnerable areas in Thrissur and Kozhikode have been evacuated to relief and rehabilitation camps.

Two children died in wall collapses in Malappuram where the water level is rising in rivers and dams. The children, both girls, aged six months and eight years, were rushed to the Kozhikode medical college hospital, where they were declared dead.

Rivers in central Kerala like Chalakkudy are overflowing, inundating vast stretches. The shutters of Peringalkuthu and chimney dams have been opened to release excess storage. Those around the river banks have been warned. Visitors are restricted at Athirapally. Very high (orange) and high (yellow) warnings have been issued to flood-prone areas of Kozhikode, Palakkad, Malappuram and Wayanad.
