TAIPEI (Taiwan), Oct 15: Forty six people were burnt to death and several others suffered burns in a major fire in a multi-story residential building in southern Taiwan, on Thursday.

The 13-story commercial-cum-residential building in Kaohsiung city's Yancheng district caught fire at 2:54 am local time, Taiwan's official Central News Agency (CNA) reported. Hundreds of rescue workers were engaged in rescue operations till late in the evening.

Poice said over 40 people were injured. Most of the victims were those trapped in the residential part of the building from the seventh to the eleventh floor. The first six floors were used for commercial purpse and therefore there was nobody in at the time of the fire.

The fire was extinguished at 7 am. A total of 139 fire trucks and ambulances were deployed. Over 50 people were rescued. CNA said about 100 senior citizens were among those living in the building.
