UK MP Amess' murder linked to Islamist extremism, say police

LONDON, Oct 16: A Conservative member of Parliament for 38 years, David Amess, 69, was stabbed to death at about noon on Friday while meeting with constituents in Leigh-on-Sea, a town about 62 km east of London.

Sir David, who represented Southend West, was holding a constituency surgery, where voters meet their MP and discuss concerns, at Belfairs Methodist Church in Eastwood Road North when he was attacked.

The audacious attack on the MP in public view has shocked the people. Earlier, Labour MP Jo Cox was killed by a far-right extremist in june 2016. Cox's killer had repeatedly shouted "Britain first" before shooting and stabbing the 41-year-old MP outside her constituency meeting near Leeds, northern England. Security for all 650 MPs is being tightened, Home Secretary Priti Patel said.

A 25-year old man has been arrested in connection with Amess's murder, but not identified. He is a British national of Somali heritage. The London Metropolitan Police described the attack as an act of terrorism. Investigation "has revealed a potential motivation linked to Islamist extremism."

His book: Amess had written about harassment in his book "Ayes & Ears: A Survivor's Guide to Westminster."

The Sun tabloid reported that the attacker stabbed Amess multiple times in the presence of two women staff, before sitting down and waiting for police to arrive.

'He was one of the kindest:' Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited the scene to pay his respects on Saturday alongwith with leader of the Opposition Labour leader Keir Starmer, House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle and Home Secretary Priti Patel. "He was one of the kindest, nicest and gentle people in politics," Johnson said.

Echo in Canada: Meanwhile, Canadian politicians said they are concerned that threats of similar incidents in Canada appear to be growing. "The MP who was murdered was doing something that we all do as members of Parliament," said Lisa Raitt, a former Canadian Conservative MP and Cabinet Minister. Canadian politicians have faced harassment and threats of violence quite often in the past and they fear to campaign.
