Cinemas reopen in Maharashtra; movie-goers to wait and watch
The cinema halls, theatres and auditoriums were allowed to reopen in Maharashtra from Friday with 50 per cent seating capacity but only multiplexes opened and most of the single- screen cinemas did not as they find it not cost-effective in view of the strict protocols. Attendance in multiplexes was also thin. However, cinema owners expect the box office collections will go up by Diwali.

MUMBAI, Oct 23: As the covid pandemic in Maharashtra has shown signs of steady retreat like elsewhere in the country, the State Government on Friday allowed the cinema halls and theatres to reopen. Air, rail and road transport, schools and factories and offices had already resumed normal functioning in the State.

The cinema halls, drama theatres and auditoriums reopened on Friday with 50 per cent seating capacity and the covid protocols in place. While the multiplexes reopened, most of the single-screen cinemas wanted to wait and watch. Occupancy was poor. By Diwali, the attendance at cinema halls is expected to improve.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said a decision on allowing 100 per cent occupancy in cinema halls, auditoriums and theatres will be taken after assessing the situation after Diwali.

The State Government had last week issued the covid guidelines. The guidelines mandate face masks, social distancing and thermal screening. The show timings will have to be staggered. Sale of only packaged food items and beverages will be allowed. Moreover, only people who have taken both doses of the covid vaccines and those showing safe status on Aarogya Setu app will be allowed entry at these establishments. Air conditioning in cinema halls should be set at temperatures between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius and humidity levels between 40 and 70 per cent.

“Owners have been facing multiple challenges. They are paying a minimum electricity bill of ?11,000 per week, salaries and property taxes. We are hopeful that the Maharashtra government will provide some relief. We are expecting cinemas to open completely on November 5 with an Akshay Kumar movie. Nearly 30% of the cinema halls are not likely to open at all due to the losses incurred," Nitin Datar, president, Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association of India, told HT.

As all economic, entertainment and other activities came to a standstill following the outbreak of covid in March 2020, cinema halls, drama theatres and auditoriums had also downed their shutters throughout the country.

Meanwhile, Mumbai on Thursday reported 429 new coronavirus positive cases and five deaths, taking the infection tally to 7,52,386 and toll to 16,197
