Sabarimala pilgrimage begins on Nov 16; Devotees must register online, follow covid guidelines

SABARIMALA, Nov 14: The Sabarimala temple in Kerala will open on Monday, November 15, for the annual 41-day Mandala puja, which starts on November 16, the first day of Malayalam month of Vrishchikam. Pilgrims will begin darshan from November 16.

The present Melshanti (chief priest), VK Jayaraj Potti, will open the Lord Ayyappa sanctum sanctorum at 5 pm on Monday and the new Melshanti, Kaleekkal Madathil N Parameshwaran Namboothiri, will assume charge. So also at the nearby Malikappuram temple on the premises Thantri Kuruvakkad Illathu Shambu Namboothiri will take the charge as the new priest. Thantri Kandararu Maheshwaru Mohanaru will conduct the pujas on the occasion.

Only 30,000 pilgrims will be allowed a day because of covid restrictions. Certificate of full vaccination or a negative RT-PCR test report not older than 72 hours is mandatory, alongwith a photo ID proof like Aadhar, voter card or passport.

The devotees need to register their names online before starting the pilgrimage. (Over 10 lakh pilgrims had already registered by October 31 while the limit is around 15 lakh for the season, official sources said. It has been announced that the vacant slots of absentees booked online will be allotted to those who reach a nearby station called Nilakkal where the police will issue the passes, which is likely to add to the confusion, and facilitate out of turn entry as usual. To take a chance the devotees have to trek a day from the plains up the Western Ghats. Devotees come from all over southern India. A stampede on the hilltop would claim a heavy toll.

The 41-day Mandala puja festival will conclude on December 26 and the temple will close at 10 pm. It will open again on December 30 for Makaravilakku festival which will be on January 14, 2022. The sanctum sanctorum will finally close on January 20.

Security will be strengthened at Sannidhanam, Pampa and Nilakkal.
