No protection to Parambir Singh till his whereabouts are disclosed: SC

NEW DELHI, Nov 18: The Supreme Court on Thursday refused protection from arrest to Parambir Singh, absconding former Mumbai police officer, in an alleged extortion case.

The second most senior IPS officer of Maharashtra was declared proclaimed offender in the case by a court in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The apex court asked his counsel to declare first where the accused police officer is and his whereabouts in order to take up his plea. A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MM Sundresh was considering the petition.

"Where are you? Are you in the country? Outside the country", Justice Kaul asked senior advocate Puneet Bail who appeared for Singh. The bench said that no protection can be granted until his whereabouts are known. "No protection, no hearing till we have the answer to the question - where are you?", Justice Kaul said, even as Singh's lawyer argued that he can "get out of the hole" if he is "allowed to breathe".

The counsel sought time till Monday to get the answers. The petition was posted for Monday. The plea seeking protection was filed through a power of attorney.

Singh had last attended his office in May this year after which he went on leave. The police had told the Bombay High Court last month that his whereabouts were not known.
