UK, France spar over death of 31 illegal migrants from France in English Channel
Typically the rubber dinghies used by illegal migrants to cross the English Channel are overloaded. What led to the disaster on Wednesday is not known. Rescue operations were still continuing. This is the worst drowning incident to take place in the Channel. "Appalled" by the tragedy, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked France to act against people-traffickers to avert such mishaps in future.

LONDON, Nov 25: Thirty one migrants from France, including five women and two children, drowned on Wednesday while crossing the English Channel to the UK in a dinghy which deflated and sank. The mishap came to light when a fisherman seeing people floating in the waters sent out an alarm.

Rescue operations were still continuing. It is not known how the rubber boat capsized, was it bad weather or was hit by any vessel. Typically they are overloaded by migrants. It was the worst such incident involving migrants to take place in the Channel, a busy shipping lane.

Four suspected people smugglers have been arrested by the French police for sending people in the most unsafe way. They charge around £3,000 each for a slot on a boat.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was "shocked and appalled" and deeply saddened by the news and wanted France to act against the people- traffickers. French President Emmanuel Macron called for a joint European approach to the crisis. He said 1,552 smugglers of migrants have been arrested in northern France and 44 smuggler networks dismantled this year. Both countries are holding talks to find ways to prevent such crossings. This year so far 25,600 migrants have crossed the Channel into the UK.
