Four Texas synagogue hostages freed, suspect shot dead
An FBI Hostage Rescue Team stormed the Colleyville synagogue in Fort Worth in Texas and rescued four people, including the rabbi, on Saturday night after a standoff that lasted 11 hours. The hostage-taker was demanding the release of Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani who is serving a prison term in the US for shooting at US military officers in Afghanistan. President Biden said, "There is more we will learn in the days ahead about the motivations of the hostage- taker."

FORT WORTH (Texas), Jan 16: A rabbi and three others held hostage in a synagogue in Fort Worth in Texas were freed on Saturday night after the police stormed the building and shot dead the hostage-taker, who is said to have had weapons and explosives. His identity has not been revealed although the police said they have his details.

Officials said the hostage-taker demanded the release of Aafia Siddiqui (49), a Pakistani neuroscientist who is serving a prison term in the US. Siddiqui was sentenced in 2010 to 86 years in prison on charges that she assaulted and shot at US military officers after being detained in Afghanistan. She is currently languishing in a Federal jail in Texas. There have been widespread demonstrations in Pakistan since then in support of Siddiqui.

The standoff began on Saturday during a morning service at Congregation Beth Israel, a Reform synagogue in Colleyville, about 40 km northwest of Dallas. The synagogue was livestreaming a Shabbat service on Facebook. An FBI Hostage Rescue Team that arrived on the scene got the residents in the neighbourhood evacuated before storming the building.

An FBI agent said negotiations with the suspect lasted several hours. North Texas police departments, Texas Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Firearms and Explosives, FBI’s Dallas field office and its hostage rescue team based in Quantico, Virginia, were all involved in the rescue operation.

Later there were sounds of gunfire heard, followed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott's announcement that the crisis was over. “Prayers answered. All hostages are out alive and safe,” Abbott said on Twitter.

President Joe Biden said in a statement, “I am grateful to the tireless work of law enforcement at all levels who acted cooperatively and fearlessly to rescue the hostages...There is more we will learn in the days ahead about the motivations of the hostage taker. But let me be clear to anyone who intends to spread hate – we will stand against anti-Semitism and against the rise of extremism in this country.”

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett thanked the US law enforcement agencies for saving the lives of the hostages. The Colleyville synagogue was established in in July 1999.
