Parkash Singh Badal tests covid positive, admitted to Ludhiana hospital

LUDHIANA, Jan 20: Former Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal (94) tested positive for covid on Wednesday and has been admitted to a hospital in Ludhiana. Doctors attending on him said on Thursday his condition is improving.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the ailing Badal and enquired about his health on Thursday. Badal is recovering in the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, where he was admitted on Wednesday afternoon.

The patriarch's son and Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal visited the hospital on Thursday evening and enquired about his health through a video call.

Badal had been touring his constituency door to door wearing no face mask since the Assembly elections were announced. He cancelled his scheduled programmes of Tuesday due to indisposition.

The Akali patron had been regularly holding public meetings before the imposition of poll code and the ban on political gatherings. He has already covered most part of the Lambi constituency, reports The Tribune.

Badal has been winning the Lambi seat since 1997. His nominarion for the upcoming election has not been announced yet.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the dates for the Assembly polls in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur in phases on January 8. Punjab will go to the polls on February 14 and the result will be declared on March 10, alongwith those of the other four States.
