As covid eases, SC to resume physical hearing from Feb 14
The physical hearings would be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays and a hybrid mode of hearing would be held on other days. Earlier on October 7 lat year, the apex court had directed that physical hearings be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and the hybrid hearing on Thursdays with virtual hearing on Mondays and Fridays when the second wave eased. However, when the third wave of covid spread, from January 3 all hearings were back to virtual mode as was since March, 2020.

NEW DELHI, Feb 8: The Supreme Court will resume physical hearing of cases from February 14 as there has been a marked improvement in the covid situation in Delhi. However, the physical hearing will be restricted to two days, reviving the style of the Modified SOP notified on October 7, 2021, a statement issued by the secretary general of the Supreme Court said on Monday.

While physical hearings would be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays, a hybrid mode of hearing would be held on other days as was being done earlier as per the circular of October 7, 2021, in which the SC directed that physical hearings be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and the hybrid hearing on Thursdays with virtual hearing on Mondays and Fridays.

The apex court had on January 2 suspended the physical hearing of cases and switched to virtual hearing for two weeks as the third wave of covid began sweeping the country. A surge in Omicron covid cases also added to the concern with the result that more than a dozen judges and a large number of registry employees tested positive. After two weeks, the period extended.

"It is hereby notified for the information of the members of the bar, party-in- person and all concerned that keeping in view the rising number of cases of Omicron variant (COVID-19), the competent authority has been pleased to direct that modified Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) notified on October 7, 2021, for physical hearing (hybrid mode) will remain suspended for the present, and all hearings before the courts for a period of two weeks from and with effect from January 3, shall be through virtual mode only," the circular read.

The virtual hearings had begun first time in March 2020 when the pandemic began. In its circular of October 7, 2021, the SC directed that physical hearings be held two days a week, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The hybrid hearing was fixed for Thursday. The virtual hearing days were fixed for Monday and Friday.

Delhi on Tuesday logged 1,114 new covid cases and 12 deaths. On Monday there were 1,151 cases. The total number of cases has reached 18,46,198 and the toll 26,010. The Test Positivity Rate on Tuesday also declined to 2.28 per cent, from Monday's 2.62 per cent.
