Queen Elizabeth catches covid, symptoms mild, to continue 'light duties'

The Buckingham palace said the Queen, 95, tested positive for covid on Sunday but has only mild symptoms. She is experiencing "mild cold-like symptoms" but expects to continue "light duties" at Windsor Castle. Her Platinum Jubilee on the throne is currently being celebrated.

LONDON, Feb 20: British monarch Queen Elizabeth has covid, the Buckingham palace said on Sunday. She is 95. The Queen had tested positive for covid but has only mild symptoms, it was stated.

However, the palace said Queen Elizabeth will continue with light duties. She had received full vaccination of two doses and a booster too, it is understood.

The world's longest reigning monarch is experiencing "mild cold-like symptoms" but expects to continue "light duties" at Windsor Castle over the coming week, the palace said.

In the morning she signed off a congratulations message to the Winter Olympic curling teams.

"She will continue to receive medical attention and will follow all the appropriate guidelines," it said in a statement.

The Queen's physician is Sir Huw Thomas, a consultant at St Mary's Hospital in London and professor of gastrointestinal genetics at Imperial College London.

In accordance with palace convention, matters of the Queen's health will be kept private and no details will be provided to the public. The news that she had undergone the test was released as an exception. For nearly a year most of her appearances have been through video.

Her eldest son and heir to the throne, Charles (73), Prince of Wales, tested positive for covid on February 10 after meeting his mother two days earlier at Windsor Castle where the Queen lives. That was his second time. Her daughter-in-law Camilla (74), Duchess of Cornwall, had also been infected with covid recently, testing positive on February 14.

"(I am) sure I speak for everyone in wishing Her Majesty The Queen a swift recovery from Covid and a rapid return to vibrant good health," Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

Marking her platinum jubilee, she completed 70 years on the throne on February 6. She will turn 96 on April 21.

Philip, the Queen's husband of more than 70 years, died in April last year, aged 99.

The UK was about to scrap coronavirus self-isolation rules and other restrictions as part of a "living with covid" strategy.
