CHENNAI, June 16: A previously vaccinated girl died of covid at the Thanjavur
Medical College Hospital on Tuesday. The 18-year-old had no comorbidities and
tested positive for covid. Reportedly she had no fever but only complained of
severe cough. She had been vaccinated with the two mandatory doses.
The girl was shifted from the private hospital where she had been admitted
initially to the Government Medical College Hospital in a bad condition at 7:15
am on Tuesday and declared dead at 2:30 pm same day. She had severe lung infection
and was tested positive there also.
The cause of death has been confirmed as covid pneumonia, respiratory failure
and cardiorespiratory arrest.
She had been vaccinated with Covishield and never had contracted the infection
earlier. This was the first time she was infected by the virus.
Her sample has been sent for whole-genome sequencing to ascertain the covid
variant.
The last time a covid death was reported in the State was on March 17 at a
private hospital.
Currently many States are experiencing an uptick in covid cases and in Tamil
Nadu 476 tested positive for the virus on Wednesday. Chennai reported 221 cases.
The test positivity rate also increased to 3.3 per cent on Wednesday from 2.9
per cent on Tuesday.
The death tally in the State is 38,026.
