As mass shootings spike in US, three killed inside Birmingham church
| |
BIRMINGHAM (Alabama), June 19: Even as rallies are being held and the Congress is hammering out a legislative plan to prevent gun violence in the wake of a spike in mass
shootings across the US in the past couple of months, three people were shot
dead by a septuagenarian inside a church in Alabama on Thursday.
The victims were Walter Rainey (84) from Irondale, Sarah Yeager (75), a woman
from Pelham, and an 84-year old woman from Hoover, who succumbed to injuries
later. The suspect, a White man, was subdued by another person present in the
room risking his own life.
The police are still looking into the motive. He was identified as Robert Findlay
Smith with a black eye. He pulled the trigger while a dinner was going on at
an event called “The Boomers Potluck” at the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church
in the Birmingham suburb of Vestavia Hills.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued a statement lamenting the horrific shooting and
said, "This should never happen - in a church, in a store, in the city or anywhere."
