CHANDIGARH, June 29: In a deeply moving episode, a newborn baby was mauled
by a dog in a Panipat hospital in the wee hours of Tuesday. The baby was 'stolen'
from its mother's side in the private hospital in Panipat in the State of Haryana
by the stray dog and mauled to death.
The two-day old boy was sleeping next to his grandmother on the floor, it is
reported. When the baby was not seen, its relatives raised an alarm. The dog
had dragged the baby out. The body was recovered from the dog in the adjoining
ground outside after a frantic search and the doctors declared the baby dead.
A CCTV footage later showed the dog grabbing the newborn and carrying him out.
The body has been sent to the local civil hospital for post-mortem examination.
The woman hailing from Uttar Pradesh was admitted to the Heart and Mother Care
Hospital in Panipat on June 25 for delivery.
In a similar incident in January, 2020, a pack of stray dogs entered the operation
theatre of a private hospital in Farrukhabad city in Uttar Pradesh and mauled
a three-hour-old baby which was yet to be moved to the baby well. The mother,
meanwhile, was shifted to the ward after a caesarian operation. The dogs had
entered the room through a window.
A 10-year-old boy was reportedly mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs in
the fields of Chanarthal village of Kurukshetra on Monday, according to a Tribune
report.
Dogs eating newborns is a familiar story in the country. Even in the heart
of the Capital Delhi several hospitals are 'garbagestans' for stray dogs to
play around.
