Newborn baby 'stolen' and mauled by stray dog in Panipat hospital

COMMENT: The stray dog in the dead of night sneaked into the ward and 'stole' the newborn as its mother and relatives were asleep. Dogs eating newborns is a familiar story in many parts of the country. Some hospitals are just 'garbagestans' for the strays to play around.

CHANDIGARH, June 29: In a deeply moving episode, a newborn baby was mauled by a dog in a Panipat hospital in the wee hours of Tuesday. The baby was 'stolen' from its mother's side in the private hospital in Panipat in the State of Haryana by the stray dog and mauled to death.

The two-day old boy was sleeping next to his grandmother on the floor, it is reported. When the baby was not seen, its relatives raised an alarm. The dog had dragged the baby out. The body was recovered from the dog in the adjoining ground outside after a frantic search and the doctors declared the baby dead. A CCTV footage later showed the dog grabbing the newborn and carrying him out.

The body has been sent to the local civil hospital for post-mortem examination.

The woman hailing from Uttar Pradesh was admitted to the Heart and Mother Care Hospital in Panipat on June 25 for delivery.

In a similar incident in January, 2020, a pack of stray dogs entered the operation theatre of a private hospital in Farrukhabad city in Uttar Pradesh and mauled a three-hour-old baby which was yet to be moved to the baby well. The mother, meanwhile, was shifted to the ward after a caesarian operation. The dogs had entered the room through a window.

A 10-year-old boy was reportedly mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs in the fields of Chanarthal village of Kurukshetra on Monday, according to a Tribune report.

Dogs eating newborns is a familiar story in the country. Even in the heart of the Capital Delhi several hospitals are 'garbagestans' for stray dogs to play around.
